In European Equity Markets the pan-European Stoxx 600 index was just above the flat-line at the closing bell, with China-exposed autos stocks leading gains on a 1% climb. Healthcare stocks were the worst performers, falling 0.4%. U.K. markets were closed due to a bank holiday. Germany’s Deutsche Wohnen fell 3% following reports on details of a planned rent cap in Berlin. Danish hearing aid manufacturer GN Store Nord fell to the bottom of the Stoxx 600, with shares down 4.8% at the end of the session.

 

In Currency Markets the U.S. dollar strengthened on Monday morning, recovering from overnight losses after the United States and China sought to ease trade war tensions. In a sign that some calm had returned to markets, the Japanese yen – which investors regard as a safe-haven – fell 0.57% to 105.99, having earlier hit a 2-1/2-year high of 104.44. In China’s onshore market, the yuan fell to 7.1540 per dollar, the lowest since February 2008. In the offshore market, the yuan slid to as low as 7.1858 yuan, the weakest since international trading in the currency began in 2010.

 

In Commodities Markets oil prices rose on Monday after the United States and China both suggested they could ease up in a trade war that has undermined the outlook for the global economy and crude demand. Brent was up 40 cents, or 0.67%, at $59.74 a barrel, while U.S. oil was up 73 cents, or 1.35%, at $54.90 a barrel. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he believed China was seeking a trade deal after he said Beijing contacted U.S. officials overnight to say it wanted a return to talks.

 

In US Equity Markets indices rebounded on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump sought to ease trade tensions with China, soothing investor nerves after an intense feud between the world’s top two economies last week sent stocks into a tailspin. The S&P 500 gained 0.83%, to 2,870.68. The Nasdaq Composite added 0.92%, to 7,822.72 were up 41.75 points, or 0.56%. Shares of Beyond Meat Inc rose 4.5% after Yum Brands Inc said it will be testing Beyond Meat’s plant-based nuggets at an Atlanta KFC restaurant. Shares of Yum Brands rose 1.3%.

 

In Bond Markets Euro zone government bond yields drifted up on Monday after the United States and China sought to ease trade war tensions, lifting sentiment in world markets and taking the shine off safe-haven debt. Germany’s 10-year Bund yield was up just 1 basis point at -0.66% after falling to as low as -0.704% in early trade . Thirty-year bond yields gave up early falls to trade flat on the day at -0.16%. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields edged off their lowest since mid-2016 but held lower on the day.
