In European Equity Markets stocks were swept lower Friday, with Swiss bank UBS Group AG among decliners in the wake of its financial update, and the selloff was pushing the market toward a weekly loss. The Stoxx Europe 600 fell 1.1 percent to 377.96. UBS shares  were knocked back 2.7 percent on concerns over margins in its wealth management division despite the lender’s 14% profit rise in the second quarter to 1.17 billion Swiss francs ($1.21 billion). But shares of Credit Suisse Group AG gained 2 percent after the Swiss lender posted better-than-expected net income of 303 million francs. Adidas AG rallied 8.2 percent after the German sports-apparel maker raised its full-year forecast.

 

In Currency Markets the U.S. dollar was broadly lower on Friday as a combination of underwhelming U.S. economic data and political uncertainty kept traders biased toward the euro and other world currencies. The euro was last up 0.5 percent at $1.1740. The dollar fell 0.9 percent to C$1.2440 against the Canadian dollar after Canada’s May GDP growth was triple what economists had expected, rising 0.6 percent for the month and 4.6 percent year over year. Against the Japanese yen, the dollar fell 0.19 percent to 111.03 yen. The Australian and New Zealand dollars were stronger, with Aussie up 0.35 percent at $0.7995 and with Kiwi adding 0.11 percent to $0.7496.

 

In Commodities Markets oil prices edged up on Friday, reaching two-month highs and on track to post the strongest weekly percentage gains this year amid short covering and as investors digested signs of easing oversupply. Brent crude futures were up 86 cents at $52.35 a barrel after reaching a two-month high of $52.68 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 57 cents at $49.61 a barrel.  Spot gold was up 0.5 percent at $1,264.30 an ounce. Silver was up 0.8 percent at $16.66 an ounce, on track for a third weekly gain. Platinum was 0.9 percent higher at $930.50 an ounce but set for its first weekly decline in three. Palladium was up 0.1 percent at $873.

 

In US Equity Markets stocks decreased on Friday as losses in Amazon and tobacco shares weighed on major indexes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.05 percent, at 21,786.58 and the S&P 500 was down 0.35 percent, at 2,466.63. The Nasdaq Composite was down 0.43 percent, at 6,354.59. Amazon’s shares were down 3.39 percent after it reported a 77 percent decrease in profit as its rapid and costly expansion into new shopping categories and countries showed no sign of slowing.  Starbucks fell 7.50 percent and Mattel 8.78 percent after their disappointing quarterly reports. Altria lost 13.2 percent and Philip Morris fell 3.5 percent.

 

In Bond Markets U.S. Treasury yields fell on Friday after data showed that U.S. labor costs increased less than expected in the second quarter, adding to concerns that inflation will remain low. Benchmark 10-year notes were last down 3/32 in price to yield 2.32 percent, up from 2.31 percent on Thursday. German 10-year yields rose as much as 5 basis points to 0.587 percent, approaching levels not seen in 19 months.
