In European Equity Markets the pan-European Stoxx 600 closed down 0.2 percent, with most sectors in negative territory. Autos and industrials were among the worst performing sectors as China cut its growth targets to a 30-year low. Telecoms were the clear out-performer, up by 0.7 percent. The sector was pushed higher by news that Vodafone is to raise about 4 billion euros by issuing mandatory convertible bonds. Vodafone was up by 1.8 percent. German chemical company Evonik rose 5.4 percent after the company announced a unit sale to boost shares.
In Currency Markets sterling fell on Tuesday after the opposition Labour party’s finance spokesman was quoted as saying few lawmakers would back Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposed Brexit deal, and there was little sign of a breakthrough in talks with Brussels. The pound, unchanged earlier in the day, fell 0.6 percent to a one-week low of $1.3097 before recovering to slightly above $1.31. It fell half a percent against the euro to 86.47 pence per euro but later rebounded to 86.13 pence.
In Commodities Markets oil rose to around $66 a barrel on Tuesday as the market balanced OPEC-led efforts to tighten supply with the restart of Libya’s biggest oilfield and the prospect of weaker demand. Supply curbs by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies have helped to drive a 20 percent gain for Brent crude this year. Russia plans to speed up its output cuts this month, the energy minister said on Monday. Brent, the international benchmark, rose 41 cents to $66.08 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude added 25 cents to $56.84.
In US Equity Markets stocks fell on Tuesday, extending a selloff from the prior session, as investors waited for developments on the U.S.-China trade talks, but a clutch of upbeat quarterly reports from retailers helped limit losses. The S&P 500 was down 0.09 percent, at 2,790.24 and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.10 percent, at 7,570.25. Align Technology Inc’s shares fell 6.7 percent, the most among S&P 500 companies after the orthodontic device maker said it expects to take a charge in its current quarter.
In Bond Markets Italian government bond yields fell up to five basis points across the curve on Tuesday on the back of firming services activity in Italy and across the euro zone. Ten-year Italian government bond yields fell to a one-month low of 2.693 percent. Two-year yields fell as much as five basis points to 0.30 percent. German 10-year government bond yields were last up two basis points at 0.181 percent, while its two-year yields rose to a one-year high of minus 0.495 percent.
