In European Equity Markets the pan-European Stoxx 600 was 1% higher at the closing bell. Retail and banking stocks climbed 2.4% to lead gains as all sectors traded in positive territory. Wirecard fell 12.8% to the bottom of the Stoxx 600 after the Financial Times published documents detailing the German payment company’s accounting processes. Interpump Group shares fell 8% to hit a six-week low as Kepler Cheuvreux cut the Italian water pump maker’s target price by 3.5%.
In Currency Markets the U.S. dollar gained for a second consecutive day on Tuesday as fading optimism over the latest China-U.S. trade truce prompted traders to buy the greenback after a selloff last week. Against a broad basket of its rivals the dollar was up 0.13% to 98.583 and around 1% away from a near 2-1/2 year high of 99.667 hit earlier this month. Elsewhere, sterling trimmed some of its earlier gains as officials raced to put a Brexit deal in place.
In Commodities Markets oil prices steadied on Tuesday after two days of losses amid U.S.-China trade talks which have investors on edge, but OPEC said it hoped to balance markets beyond 2020 in a sign of possible further supply curbs. Brent crude fell 4 cents, or 0.07%, to $59.31 a barrel by, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 15 cents, or 0.28%, to $53.44.
In US Equity Markets stocks open higher on Tuesday, as strong earnings reports from JPMorgan Chase, UnitedHealth and Johnson & Johnson allayed concerns about the fallout from a prolonged U.S.-China trade war on corporate America. Home-furnishing retailer Bed Bath & Beyond Inc was up 3.8% after Keybanc upgraded the stock to “overweight”. Shares of mobile game developer Glu Mobile jumped 9.1% as it is set to replace SolarEdge Technologies in the S&P SmallCap 600.
In Bond Markets U.S. Treasury yields edged lower on Tuesday as investors pared back expectations that the United States and China are close to reaching an agreement to end their trade war. Benchmark 10-year yields rose to a three-week high of 1.767% on Friday, before falling to 1.720% on Tuesday. The bond market was closed on Monday for the Columbus Day holiday.
