In Asian Equity Markets Japan’s Nikkei ended flat in choppy trade on Friday as investors awaited the release of the U.S. monthly jobs report, which will set the tone for the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook, while bank stocks outperformed on higher yields. The Nikkei was flat at 18,918.20 points after traversing positive and negative territory. The broader Topix gained 0.3 percent at 1,514.99 and the JPX-Nikkei Index 400 rose 0.2 percent to 13,576.07. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan was down 0.3 percent. China’s Shanghai composite fell 0.59 percent after initially opening flat, while the Shenzhen composite was down 0.43 percent. Meanwhile in Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index was down 0.62 percent.

In Currency Markets the recently beleaguered dollar rose to its session high against the yen on Friday after the Bank of Japan offered to buy Japanese government bonds in a surprise operation aimed at bringing down JGB yields, as investors awaited U.S. jobs data later in the session. The dollar was up 0.2 percent at 113.04 yen after rising as high as 113.24 earlier. It fell to 112.05 yen overnight, its lowest since late November, and was still on track to fall 1.8 percent for the week. The euro was steady at $1.0759 after rising as high as $1.0829 overnight, its loftiest peak since Dec. 8. The Australian dollar fell 0.04 percent to $0.7653. The dollar index edged up 0.1 percent to 99.870.

In Commodities Markets oil prices edged up on Friday on news that U.S. President Donald Trump could be set to impose new sanctions on multiple Iranian entities, firing geopolitical tensions between the two nations. Brent crude futures had risen 0.4 percent, to $56.77 a barrel, after settling down 24 cents at $56.56 in the previous session. Front month U.S. crude futures climbed 0.5 percent, to $53.82 a barrel, after ending Tuesday down 34 cents. Spot gold edged down 0.3 percent to $1,212.91 an ounce. Spot silver fell 0.8 percent to $17.30, after hitting its strongest in over 11 weeks at $17.73 in the last session. Platinum fell 0.8 percent to $991.20 and palladium fell 0.8 percent to $751.28.

In US Equity Markets stocks ended little changed on Thursday as the recent rally continued to stall following President Donald Trump’s latest comments on trade and the policies he will pursue. The S&P 500 gained 0.06 percent, to 2,280.85 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.11 percent, to 5,636.20. After the closing bell, Amazon shares fell 3.7 percent as the retailer’s revenue missed analyst estimates. Macy’s shares rose 5.2 percent. The New York Post reported the retailer’s outgoing CEO Terry Lundgren has become open to offers from potential buyers. Mead Johnson Nutrition jumped 21.4 percent after Reckitt Benckiser said it was in advanced talks to buy the company for $16.7 billion.

In Bond Markets Japanese government bond yields were yanked back from one-year highs on Friday after the Bank of Japan conducted a special bond buying operation for only the second time, arresting an earlier rise in yields. The benchmark 10-year yield was up half a basis point at 0.110 percent after climbing to 0.150 percent, its highest since late January 2016. The 20-year yield was up 2 basis points at 0.705 percent after declining briefly to 0.685 percent after the BOJ’s special buying operation from a one-year high of 0.730 percent.
