In Asian Equity Markets fell in Friday morning trade. The Nikkei 225 in Japan slipped 0.55% in morning trade. Shares of automaker Nissan Motor dropped more than 2%, after the company announced Thursday it would cut 12,500 jobs worldwide following a 95.5% decline in its first-quarter operating profit. Mainland Chinese shares also dipped in early trade, as the Shanghai composite declined 0.23%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.64%, after the city reported Thursday that it saw its biggest annual decline in exports in almost three and a half years in June.
In Currency Markets the U.S. dollar traded near a two-week high versus the yen as investors pared expectations for aggressive Federal Reserve interest rate cuts ahead of key U.S. economic data due later in the day. The euro held gains after European Central Bank (ECB) kept policy unchanged, disappointing some market participants who had bet on a possible easing. ECB President Mario Draghi also sounded more upbeat on the euro-zone economy than some investors expected, curbing speculation the bank was about to enter a prolonged easing cycle.
In Commodities Markets oil prices fell on Friday after a Reuters poll showed global economic growth is likely to slow further amid the U.S.-China trade war, although losses were limited by tensions in the Middle East. Brent crude futures were down 24 cents, or 0.4%, at $63.15 a barrel. They rose 0.3% in the previous session.U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was down 5 cents, or 0.1%, at $55.97 a barrel, after gaining 0.25% overnight. Gold fell 1% on Thursday to touch an one-week low after robust U.S. economic data.
In US Equity Markets indices fell from record highs on Thursday following a flurry of downbeat quarterly results from Ford Motor and other companies. Ford Motor Co fell 7.45% after the automaker reported a lower-than-expected profit and gave a disappointing full-year earnings forecast. Align Technology fell 27% and was the biggest decliner on the S&P 500 after the orthodontic device maker’s current-quarter forecast came in below estimates. The S&P 500 fell 0.53% to 3,003.7. The Nasdaq Composite declined 1% to 8,238.54.
In Bond Markets U.S. Treasury yields rose on Thursday after European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said that the bank sees a low risk of a recession in the euro zone, even as he acknowledged a worsening outlook. Benchmark 10-year Treasuries were last down 7/32 in price to yield 2.097%. The yields fell to 2.011% immediately after the ECB’s statement, the lowest since July 8, and rose as high as 2.100% after Draghi’s comments.
